The Dalton brothers are one of the most iconic groups of villains in the Lucky Luke comic series. Originally created by Morris in 1954 and subsequently renewed by Goscinny in 1957, they were inspired by a gang of real outlaws, the Dalton Gang, who operated in the Far West between 1890 and 1892. Their debut occurred in the sixth issue of the series , entitled ''Outlaws'', where the four brothers Bob, Grat, Bill and Emmett brought terror to the West, often meeting the protagonist Lucky Luke who defeated them in epic shootouts. Their presence in the series was so welcome that, despite their execution in the original comic, Morris and Goscinny decided to create a secondary version, the Dalton cousins: Joe, William, Jack andaverell. This second quartet of villains debuted in 1958 in a story written by Goscinny and drawn by Morris entitled ''The Dalton Cousins'', where they sought revenge for their cousins by killing Lucky Luke. However, their first actual appearance was in 1957, as members of a jury in an episode in which Lucky Luke faced another threat. Since then, the Dalton brothers have become Lucky Luke's most recurring adversaries, appearing in numerous subsequent books . Their unique characterization and the comical situations in which they find themselves have made them loved by readers of all ages, making them a fundamental element of the Lucky Luke universe.
