SpongeBob, also known as SpongeBob SquarePants, is a famous American animated series created by Stephen Hillenburg. The series follows the adventures of the main character, SpongeBob SquarePants, and his friends in the bustling, fictional underwater city of Bikini Bottom. The idea for the series emerged in 1996, shortly after the end of production on the animated series ''Rocko's Modern Life'', on which Hillenburg worked as creative director. Many of the ideas for SpongeBob originated from an unpublished educational book titled ''The Intertidal Zone,'' written by Hillenburg in 1989 to teach his students about marine life. The pilot for the series premiered at Nickelodeon in 1997 under the original title of ''SpongeBoy Ahoy!'', which was later changed to ''SpongeBob SquarePants'' for copyright reasons. The series premiered on May 1, 1999 during the twelfth Kids' Choice Awards, and officially debuted on television on July 17, 1999. In Italy, the rights to the series were initially acquired by Mediaset, with broadcasts on Italy 1 starting August 30, 2004 for the first seven seasons, followed by full airings on Nickelodeon starting December 24 of that year. Subsequently, the series was rerun on Boing starting in April 2011 and on Super! starting in June 2012, including both reruns and unreleased episodes.
