CSX Transportation, abbreviated to CSXT, is a Class I railroad operating in the Eastern United States and the Canadian provinces of Ontario and Quebec, operating approximately 21,000 miles of track. It is the principal subsidiary of CSX Corporation, a Fortune 500 company headquartered in Jacksonville, Florida. CSX Corporation was formed in 1980 by the merger of Chessie System and Seaboard Coast Line Industries, two holding companies that controlled railroads in the Eastern United States, completing the merger of the subsidiaries in 1987. CSX Transportation was formally created in 1986, successor of Seaboard System Railroad, and in 1999 acquired about half of Conrail in partnership with competitor Norfolk Southern Railway. In 2022 it acquired Pan Am Railways, expanding its presence in northern New England. CSX has Norfolk Southern as its main competitor, with which it shares a duopoly on transcontinental freight rail lines in the eastern half of the US.
