''Courage the Cowardly Dog'' is an American animated series created and directed by John R. Dilworth, which revolves around the adventures of Leone, an anthropomorphic pink dog who lives with an elderly couple on a farm in the center of ''Elsewhere''. The series is characterized by a dark and surreal atmosphere, and in each episode the trio finds themselves involved in bizarre and often disturbing misadventures of a paranormal and supernatural nature. The pilot episode, entitled ''The Space Chicken'', was presented by Dilworth during the What a Cartoon! segment, which aired on February 18, 1996. This segment was even nominated for an Academy Award, although it lost to Wallace and Gromit's ''A Perfect Shear''. The complete series was broadcast in the United States United on Cartoon Network, from November 12, 1999 to November 22, 2002, for a total of 52 episodes spread over four seasons. In Italy, the series was broadcast on Cartoon Network from 3 April 2000 to 27 October 2004 and subsequently broadcast on TMC, TMC 2 and Boing. Leone's events take place in the mysterious town of Altrove, where Marilù and Giustino, a couple of elderly farmers, live with the fearful orphan dog. Their isolated house becomes the stage for paranormal events, with crazy and cruel creatures such as monsters, aliens, demons, zombies and mad scientists who often endanger Marilù's life. In each episode, Leone does his utmost to save his owner, while Giustino, unaware of what is happening at home, always scolds the dog with the recurring joke: ''Stupid dog!''.
