Clifford (Clifford the Big Red Dog) is a British-American preschool animated television series, based on the character and the original Clifford the Big Red Dog book series. This series was created by Norman Bridwell and published by Scholastic, originally airing on PBS Kids from September 1, 2000 to February 25, 2002. Its story begins in 1963 when Norman Bridwell, after being rejected by numerous publishers for his illustrations, he decided to create and illustrate a series of children's books. Clifford's first book was published less than a month after Bridwell wrote and illustrated it. The intent of the series is not only to entertain children with the protagonist's adventures, but also to impart important moral lessons. Clifford's narratives have been adapted into various formats over the years. In the 1980s and 1990s, there were home videos and an animated series called Clifford's Fun With..., produced by Lee Mendelson and Bill Melendez, already known for the Peanuts animated shorts. This series, consisting of 30-minute episodes each, featured Clifford voiced by Brent Titcomb and his owner Emily Elizabeth Howard voiced by Alyson Court. The soundtrack was performed by Phillip Namanworth and Benjamin Goldstein. Additionally, some educational video games have been developed. In 2000, the main animated television series was produced by Scholastic Media, followed by a spin-off titled A Puppy Called Clifford in 2003. In 2004, the animated film Clifford's Really was released Big Movie, although it was never published in Italy. In Italy, the series did not enjoy great success with the public. The first series was broadcast for the first time on Rai 2 on 1 April 2003, and was then repeated on RaiSat Ragazzi and RaiSat Yoyo (now Rai Yoyo). Subsequently, it was broadcast several times on JimJam starting from August 2008. The second spin-off, A puppy called Clifford, aired for the first time on RaiSat Ragazzi in April 2006, then on Rai 2 in September 2007 and finally on JimJam in 2010. However, neither the main series nor the spin-off have ever been distributed on VHS or DVD in Italy.
